Institute Overview

The Maritime Academy of India in Kolkata was established in March 1998 under the charitable trust Nabik Griha Samity, which itself was founded in 1954 by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy to provide welfare and lodging facilities for seafarers. The academy was formally inaugurated in 1999 by then Chief Minister Jyoti Basu and has since been dedicated to offering affordable, DG Shipping–approved maritime training. Managed by a trust committee that includes representatives from the Mercantile Marine Department, shipping companies, and the Forward Seamen’s Union of India, the academy emphasizes transparency, accessibility, and professional excellence. Over the years, it has successfully trained more than fifty batches of Indian Ratings, making it one of the most reputable maritime institutes in Eastern India. The campus is fully residential, requiring students to stay on-site, which fosters discipline and immersion in the maritime environment. Facilities include classrooms with modern teaching aids, workshops for practical training, and welfare support services that continue the trust’s mission of assisting seafarers.
