Founded in 1993, Orissa Maritime Academy (OMA) is an autonomous body under the Government of Odisha, registered under the Society Registration Act, 1860. It was established by Sri Rama Kant Rath, then Chief Secretary to the Government of Odisha, with active support from late Biju Patnaik.
OMA is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (Approval No. TR/A/74/2006) and holds ISO 9001:2015 certification. It was the first maritime academy in India to conduct the G.P. Rating course regularly, making it a pioneer in entry‑level seafarer training.
