Course Description

The Basic Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations (LGTCO) is a specialized familiarization course designed for seafarers assigned to work on gas carriers, including LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) vessels. Given the complex nature of carrying gases in a liquid state—often at extremely low (cryogenic) temperatures or high pressures—this course is critical for ensuring the safety of the crew and the vessel. Approved by the DGS and compliant with STCW requirements, the LGTCO module provides a deep understanding of the thermodynamic properties of gases and the sophisticated equipment used to transport them across the ocean. The training dives into the unique hazards associated with liquefied gases, such as extreme cold, flammability, and the risks of BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion). Students learn about the different types of gas containment systems, including membrane tanks and spherical tanks, as well as the operation of reliquefaction plants and cargo heaters. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on gas detection systems, oxygen monitoring, and the use of specialized safety equipment. Trainees also study the regulatory framework of the IGC Code (International Gas Carrier Code), which governs the design and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk. Completing the LGTCO course is the first step toward a lucrative career in the gas tanker sector, which is one of the fastest-growing segments of the maritime industry. Graduates receive a Certificate of Proficiency that allows them to work on a wide variety of gas carriers. This course not only teaches technical skills but also fosters the meticulous attention to detail required to handle sensitive energy cargoes. By the end of the program, seafarers are prepared to support safe cargo operations and respond effectively to emergencies, ensuring that the high-tech world of gas transport remains safe and efficient.
