Course Description

The Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations (OCTCO), often referred to as the Tanker Familiarization course, is the essential entry-level qualification for any seafarer planning to serve on oil or chemical tankers. Regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and strictly adhering to the STCW Code, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the specialized world of liquid cargo handling. Because these vessels carry highly flammable, toxic, and environmentally hazardous substances, the training focuses heavily on the fundamental principles of safety, fire prevention, and pollution control. It ensures that every crew member—regardless of their rank—is fully aware of the unique risks associated with tanker operations. The curriculum covers the physical and chemical properties of crude oil, refined petroleum products, and a wide array of liquid chemicals. Trainees learn about the design and construction of modern tankers, the layout of cargo piping systems, and the operation of specialized pumps. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to health hazards and the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and gas-measuring instruments. Students are also trained in emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of a spill or a fire involving hazardous liquids. As the global shipping industry moves toward stricter environmental compliance, this course also emphasizes the MARPOL regulations governing the prevention of marine pollution. By completing the OCTCO course, seafarers gain the necessary Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) required to obtain a tanker endorsement on their CDC. This training is a prerequisite for moving into senior roles and eventually pursuing advanced tanker courses. It provides the foundational confidence and technical literacy required to work safely in a high-pressure environment, ensuring that the critical flow of the world’s energy and chemical resources remains safe and secure.
