Course Description

The Chief Mate (Foreign Going) Phase - I course is the first of two critical preparatory modules designed for Second Officers aspiring to move into senior management ranks. As the Chief Officer is primarily responsible for the vessel's cargo operations, stability, and deck department management, this course provides an advanced level of technical training that goes far beyond the foundational knowledge of a junior officer. Approved by the DGS, Phase I focuses heavily on the complexities of advanced navigation and the scientific principles governing the maritime environment, preparing candidates for the high-level responsibilities they will face as the ship's second-in-command. The curriculum is academically rigorous, covering advanced celestial navigation, spherical trigonometry, and the intricate physics of marine meteorology. Students learn to predict weather patterns and navigate globally using sophisticated astronomical calculations. The course also introduces the administrative and legal responsibilities of a senior officer, emphasizing the importance of the ISM Code and international safety management. By utilizing advanced simulators and case studies, the program challenges officers to manage complex navigational scenarios where precision and leadership are paramount. For an officer, Phase I represents a significant shift in professional status. It is the beginning of the journey toward the Master’s license, requiring a high degree of self-discipline and analytical thinking. In the modern shipping industry, where vessels are becoming larger and more automated, the expertise gained in this course is essential for maintaining operational safety and environmental compliance. Successfully completing Phase I is a prerequisite for moving to Phase II and eventually appearing for the MMD Chief Mate examinations, marking the candidate as a senior professional in the global maritime community.
