Course Description

The Company Security Officer (CSO) course is a high-level management program designed for maritime professionals who wish to take on the responsibility of managing security for an entire fleet of vessels from a shore-based position. Under the ISPS Code, every shipping company must designate a CSO who ensures that Ship Security Assessments are carried out and that Ship Security Plans are developed, submitted for approval, and thereafter implemented and maintained for each ship in the company’s fleet. This DGS-approved course bridges the gap between onboard security operations and corporate security management, providing the administrative and strategic expertise required to protect global maritime assets from a central office. The curriculum is focused on the macro-level aspects of maritime security. Trainees learn to manage the complex relationship between the ship’s crew, the company's management, and various international port authorities. Key modules include the development of standardized security protocols across diverse vessel types, the management of emergency response teams during security incidents (such as piracy attacks), and the coordination of internal audits to ensure constant compliance with the ISPS Code. The course also dives deep into risk management, teaching CSOs how to analyze global intelligence to determine the necessary security levels for vessels transiting high-risk areas. In the modern era, a significant portion of the training is dedicated to Maritime Cyber Security Management, ensuring that the company’s digital infrastructure is as secure as its physical vessels. Successfully attaining the CSO certification marks a transition into senior maritime management. It is a prestigious qualification that is essential for those aspiring to roles such as Marine Manager, Designated Person Ashore (DPA), or Head of Fleet Security. By mastering these skills, a CSO ensures that the company remains legally compliant and that its most valuable assets—the seafarers and the vessels—are protected by a comprehensive, global security strategy.
