The Familiarization Training Programme For LNG Tanker Operation (widely known in the industry as Basic Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations or LGTF) is a fundamental certification for seafarers entering the specialized world of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) transport. Regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, and strictly aligned with the STCW Code (Regulation V/1-2), this course is mandatory for all officers and ratings who have not previously served on gas carriers and are assigned specific duties related to cargo or cargo equipment. Given the unique risks associated with cryogenic cargoes—carried at temperatures as low as -162°C—this course provides the essential safety and operational foundation required to serve on these high-tech vessels. The curriculum is designed to bridge the gap between general maritime knowledge and the high-precision requirements of a gas tanker. Trainees explore the physical and chemical properties of liquefied natural gas, the design of various containment systems (including Membrane and Moss-Rosenberg types), and the complex pipeline and pumping arrangements unique to LNG carriers. A significant portion of the training focuses on the Ship/Shore Interface, Boil-Off Gas (BOG) management, and the use of specialized gas detection and monitoring equipment. Practical sessions emphasize emergency response, pollution prevention, and the rigorous safety protocols required to manage fire risks and cryogenic hazards in a high-pressure environment.Successfully completing this 5-day program is the first step toward obtaining a Dangerous Cargo Endorsement (DCE) - Level 1. It is a professional necessity for cadets, ratings, and junior officers aiming for a lucrative career in the gas sector. By mastering these fundamentals, seafarers ensure they are prepared to contribute to the safe and efficient global transport of clean energy, meeting the highest international standards of maritime safety.
