Course Description

The Navigational Watchkeeping Officer - NCV (NWKO NCV) course is a specialized management-level competency program designed for seafarers aiming to serve as certified officers on vessels operating within Near Coastal Voyage (NCV) limits. Regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, and strictly compliant with STCW Regulation II/1, this 4-month course is the definitive gateway for deck cadets and ratings to transition into the rank of a licensed officer. Unlike the Foreign Going (FG) stream, the NCV certification is specifically tailored for the high-intensity operations of the coastal fleet, including dredgers, offshore supply vessels (OSVs), tugs, and multipurpose support vessels. It provides the technical and operational mastery required to navigate the complex and crowded waters of the Indian coastline with absolute safety and professional precision. The curriculum is a rigorous blend of traditional seamanship and modern electronic navigation. Trainees delve into the science of terrestrial and coastal navigation, chartwork, and the practical application of bridge watchkeeping procedures and emergency response. A significant focus is placed on ship construction, stability, and environmental protection, ensuring that officers can manage vessel integrity in diverse sea states. The training also covers cargo handling and stowage, specifically focusing on the specialized requirements of coastal trade. By utilizing high-fidelity simulators, the course prepares officers for real-world challenges, such as navigating in restricted visibility and coordinating with shore-based authorities. Successfully attaining the NWKO (NCV) Certificate of Competency (CoC) marks a significant milestone in a maritime career. It signifies that the officer possesses the technical wisdom and leadership capability to maintain a safe navigational watch. For many, this certification is the first step toward the ultimate goal of becoming a Master (NCV). With the rapid expansion of India's coastal shipping and offshore energy sectors, NWKO (NCV) officers are in high demand, offering a career path defined by professional excellence, tactical expertise, and the unique challenges of the near-shore maritime frontier.
