Course Description

The Refresher and Updating Training Course for Engineers is a comprehensive professional program designed for all marine engineering officers—from Junior Watchkeepers to Chief Engineers—to ensure their technical knowledge and legal competencies remain in absolute alignment with the evolving maritime landscape. Regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, and mandated by the STCW Convention’s five-year revalidation cycle, this course is the vital link that maintains the operational integrity of the engineering department. In an industry defined by rapid decarbonization and digital transformation, this program provides the essential platform for engineers to master the latest international regulations, technological innovations, and safety protocols required to operate the modern global fleet. The curriculum is meticulously curated to cover the entire spectrum of modern marine engineering. Trainees receive high-level updates on the newest MARPOL Annex VI amendments regarding carbon intensity (CII) and energy efficiency (EEXI), alongside the latest SOLAS requirements for fire-safety and life-saving appliances. Technical modules focus on the shift toward "Smart Shipping," including the management of electronically controlled main engines, integrated automation systems (IAS), and the safe handling of high-voltage shipboard installations. Beyond machinery, the course emphasizes the "Human Element," reinforcing Engine Room Resource Management (ERRM) and leadership strategies to foster a proactive safety culture. By utilizing real-world case studies and the latest diagnostic tools, the program prepares engineers to troubleshoot complex systemic failures with professional precision. Successfully completing this refresher is a mandatory requirement for the revalidation of any engineering Certificate of Competency (CoC). It signifies a professional commitment to excellence and ensures that the officer is legally authorized and technically prepared to serve on international-flagged vessels. By bridging the gap between historical experience and future innovation, this course safeguards the careers of marine engineers and upholds the impeccable reputation of the Indian maritime technical workforce.
