Course Description

The Refresher Course for Medical Examiner of Seafarers (RDFC) is a mandatory professional revalidation program for medical practitioners already empaneled by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India. In the highly specialized and isolated environment of a merchant vessel, a seafarer's health is the primary pillar of operational safety. Regulated by the DGS Maritime Health Branch and strictly aligned with the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules and the STCW Convention, this one-day intensive course ensures that approved doctors stay updated with the latest international medical standards and evolving national regulations. For a medical examiner, this refresher is not just a regulatory formality but a vital update on the "Safety of Life at Sea" (SOLAS) protocols from a clinical perspective. The curriculum is meticulously designed to bridge the gap between land-based clinical practice and the unique rigors of maritime medicine. Trainees receive advanced updates on the physical and psychological stressors of modern seafaring, including the impact of long-haul voyages and multi-cultural crew dynamics. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to the STCW Manila Amendments and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, focusing on specialized medical criteria such as color vision standards, hearing thresholds, and the management of chronic conditions in an offshore context. Practitioners also undergo training on the latest enhancements to the DGS e-Governance portal, mastering the secure digital uploading of medical fitness certificates and the administrative handling of "Unfit" declarations. Successfully completing the RDFC is a non-negotiable requirement for the five-yearly renewal of a doctor’s DGS approval. It signifies that the examiner possesses the technical wisdom and current regulatory insight required to safeguard the global maritime supply chain. By mastering these updated clinical standards, DGS-approved doctors ensure that every seafarer boarding a vessel is physically and mentally prepared for the challenges of the high seas, upholding the highest standards of maritime occupational health.
