Course Description

Fire remains the most dangerous threat aboard any vessel, making the Refresher Training for Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (RFPFF) one of the most vital courses in a seafarer's career. Required every five years under STCW norms, this course ensures that fire-fighting skills do not diminish over time. In 2026, the RFPFF module in India has been enhanced to address the specific fire-safety challenges of modern vessels, including those powered by alternative fuels and equipped with high-density lithium-ion battery banks. This course re-establishes the fundamental "Fire Triangle" principles while introducing advanced containment strategies tailored for the next generation of ships. The practical component of the RFPFF is intensive, requiring trainees to operate various types of portable fire extinguishers, handle high-pressure fire hoses, and demonstrate proficiency in using the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). In the 2026 curriculum, special attention is given to "Smoke Room" drills, where seafarers must navigate zero-visibility environments to locate and "extinguish" simulated fires. This hands-on training is crucial for maintaining the confidence and technical dexterity needed to act as a first responder during a real shipboard fire. Before attending the physical class, candidates must complete the prerequisite e-learning modules, which cover the theoretical updates in fire chemistry and international fire-safety systems (FSS Code). The RFPFF is essential for the continued validity of your CDC and is a prerequisite for joining any commercial vessel. By successfully completing this refresher, seafarers demonstrate their commitment to the "Safety First" culture that defines the Indian Merchant Navy, ensuring they are prepared to protect the lives of their colleagues, the integrity of the vessel, and the marine environment from the devastating effects of fire.
