Course Description

The Refresher and Updating Training Course for Engineers at the Management Level is a specialized high-level program mandatory for senior engineering officers, specifically Chief Engineers (MEO Class I) and Second Engineers (MEO Class II). In the current era of rapid technological advancement and stringent environmental oversight, this course serves as the vital mechanism for revalidating a management-level Certificate of Competency (CoC) every five years. Regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, and aligned with the STCW Manila Amendments, the program ensures that the leaders of the engine department remain at the absolute forefront of maritime engineering excellence and international regulatory compliance. The curriculum is technically sophisticated, moving beyond basic operations to focus on the strategic management of a vessel's mechanical and electrical assets. Trainees receive comprehensive updates on the latest MARPOL Annex VI amendments regarding carbon intensity and emissions control, as well as the latest SOLAS requirements for shipboard safety. A major emphasis is placed on the operation and troubleshooting of electronically controlled engines (ME and RT-flex), advanced automation, and high-voltage power management systems. Furthermore, the course addresses the "Human Element" in engineering, focusing on Engine Room Resource Management (ERRM), leadership, and the effective delegation of tasks within a multicultural technical team. Successfully completing this refresher is a non-negotiable requirement for senior engineers to maintain their operational status and legal authority on board. It signifies a professional commitment to continuous learning and technical integrity. By mastering these updated management protocols, senior engineers safeguard their professional careers and ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable operation of the global merchant fleet. This course provides the strategic technical wisdom required to lead the engine department through the complexities of the modern maritime environment with professional authority.
