Course Description

The Training for General Purpose Ratings (GP Rating) is a highly practical six-month residential course designed for students who wish to join the Merchant Navy as ratings. Regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, this course is the primary entry point for candidates who have completed their 10th-grade education and seek a rapid transition into a seafaring career. Unlike officer-level programs, GP Rating focuses on developing "polyvalent" skills, meaning trainees are educated in both the Deck and Engine departments. This dual-department training makes graduates incredibly versatile, allowing them to assist with navigation, cargo handling, and seamanship on deck, while also supporting machinery maintenance and operation in the engine room. The curriculum is hands-on and rigorous, emphasizing physical fitness, safety, and mechanical aptitude. Students spend significant time in workshops learning about tools, welding, painting, and basic engine maintenance, alongside deck-side skills like knot-tying, mooring operations, and helmsmanship. In 2026, the GP Rating curriculum also includes modern modules on environmental protection and waste management, ensuring that the new generation of crew members is aligned with international green shipping goals. The training is conducted in a disciplined, military-style environment to prepare candidates for the structured lifestyle of a merchant ship.Upon successful completion and passing the All India Exit Examination, graduates are issued a Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC), which is their passport to the maritime world. They typically start as Trainee Ratings and progress to Ordinary Seaman (OS), Able Seaman (AB), and eventually Bosun on deck, or Fitter/Motorman in the engine room. For those with ambition, the GP Rating route also provides a pathway to become a deck or engine officer after gaining the required sea-time and passing relevant competency exams. It is a robust, affordable, and quick route to a globally adventurous and financially rewarding career.
